The Directorate of School Education Jammu (DSEJ) has announced the closure of all government and private schools across the Jammu Division until September 1, 2025, following days of relentless rainfall, landslides, and unsafe travel conditions.
Safety First: Why Schools Are Shut
The decision comes in response to record-breaking monsoon rains that have battered the region since mid-August. Torrential downpours triggered flash floods, mudslides, and road blockages, especially in hilly districts like Kishtwar, Kathua, Reasi, and Ramban, where over 130 lives have been lost and dozens remain missing.
School premises have been rendered unfit for physical classes due to waterlogging, while damaged roads pose serious risks to students and staff commuting daily.
Online Classes Considered
Authorities have advised school heads to explore the possibility of online classes for students in Classes 9 to 12, where infrastructure and internet connectivity allow. However, the feasibility remains limited in remote areas.
Weather Forecast & Alerts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for continued heavy rainfall through September 2, with warnings of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds up to 40 km/h. The situation is being closely monitored, and further updates on school reopening will follow once conditions stabilize.
