The CEO of Salesforce, Marc Benioff, has confirmed the company has laid off 4,000 employees, primarily from its customer support division. He attributed the job cuts directly to the increasing efficiency and adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) within the company’s operations. The layoffs represent a significant reduction of nearly 45% of the support workforce, which was reduced from 9,000 to approximately 5,000 employees.

The Role of AI in Salesforce’s Workforce Reduction

Benioff, speaking on the “Logan Bartlett” podcast, explained that the company has been able to “rebalance” its workforce because AI agents can now handle a substantial portion of customer interactions. He stated that AI now manages about 50% of all customer conversations, a dramatic increase from a year ago. Benioff framed this as a strategic move to define the “next generation of the enterprise” where AI and humans collaborate seamlessly.

The company’s new AI system, dubbed “Agentforce,” automates routine customer inquiries and even addresses a massive backlog of over 100 million uncalled sales leads that had accumulated over the past 26 years due to insufficient staffing. Benioff highlighted how the AI system functions as an “omnichannel supervisor” that can recognize when to escalate complex issues to human agents, ensuring that human expertise is still utilized for more nuanced tasks.

A Shifting Stance on AI and Employment

The recent layoffs stand in sharp contrast to Benioff’s earlier public statements. Just two months prior, he had downplayed fears of AI-driven mass unemployment, arguing that AI would augment rather than replace workers and that “the humans are not going away.” The rapid implementation of “agentic AI” and the subsequent job cuts suggest that the pace of AI’s impact on the workforce may be faster and more substantial than many industry leaders, including Benioff himself, had publicly acknowledged. This event underscores a broader trend in the tech industry where companies are restructuring their workforces to prioritize AI-focused roles and increase efficiency.
