A devastating cloudburst struck Chosoti village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on Thursday, claiming at least 46 lives and injuring over 100 people. The disaster occurred during the annual Machail Mata Yatra, when hundreds of devotees had gathered in the remote Himalayan region. Rescue operations are ongoing, with 167 people pulled from the rubble and 69 still reported missing.

What Happened?

The cloudburst, which hit around 11 AM, triggered flash floods that swept away homes, shops, vehicles, and a community kitchen (langar) serving pilgrims. Eyewitnesses described the sound as “a blast,” with debris engulfing the area within minutes. Among the deceased are two CISF personnel, and many of the injured are in critical condition.

Rescue & Relief Efforts

  • White Knight Corps has deployed over 300 troops with medical teams and relief supplies.
  • NDRF, SDRF, Army, and Police are working round-the-clock to locate survivors and clear debris.
  • Control rooms and help desks have been activated across the district to assist families and pilgrims.
  • Specialist doctors from PGI Chandigarh are en route to bolster medical care.

Infrastructure Damage

  • 16 houses, 3 temples, 4 water mills, and a 30-meter bridge destroyed.
  • Over a dozen vehicles damaged at the pilgrimage base camp.
  • Electricity poles and trees uprooted, blocking access routes.

Official Response

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed condolences and assured full support. CM Omar Abdullah cancelled Independence Day cultural events and briefed Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the situation.
