The vibrant Janmashtami festivities in Mumbai turned somber as 75 Govindas were injured during Dahi Handi celebrations across the city, with two participants currently in critical condition, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Breakdown of Injuries

  • Central Mumbai: 48 injuries reported; 27 still under treatment, including 23-year-old Shreyas Chalke in critical condition at GT Hospital.
  • Eastern Suburbs: 17 injuries; 4 under treatment, 13 discharged.
  • Western Suburbs: 10 injuries; 9 discharged, 1 critical — 9-year-old Aryan Yadav at BDBA Hospital, Kandivali.
  • Thane District: 3 minors injured during pyramid formation, all receiving treatment at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital.

Tragically, one Govinda, Jagmohan Shivkiran Chaudhari (32), died after falling while tying a handi rope in Mankhurd.

Dahi Handi, a hallmark of Janmashtami celebrations in Maharashtra, involves teams of Govindas forming human pyramids to break a clay pot filled with curd or butter, symbolizing Lord Krishna’s playful spirit. Despite heavy rains and safety advisories, thousands participated in the high-energy event across Mumbai.
