Bengaluru will experience a major disruption in its water supply for 60 hours due to essential emergency maintenance work on the Cauvery Water Supply Project. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has announced that the shutdown will occur in phases between September 15 and September 17. Citizens are strongly advised to store water in advance.
Scheduled Shutdown Details
BWSSB Chairman Dr. V. Ram Prasat Manohar confirmed the planned suspension of water supply, stating that the maintenance is critical for ensuring the long-term, uninterrupted operation of the city’s water infrastructure. The shutdown will be carried out in two distinct phases:
- Cauvery Phase 5: The water supply for this phase will be suspended for 60 hours, starting from 1 a.m. on September 15 and ending at 1 p.m. on September 17.
- Cauvery Stages 1, 2, 3, and 4: These stages will face a 24-hour shutdown, from 6 a.m. on September 16 to 6 a.m. on September 17.
This work is necessary to maintain the water treatment plants and main pipelines in good condition, ensuring they can continue to supply drinking water to Bengaluru.
Impact and Advisory
The water supply suspension will affect all areas of Bengaluru that depend on the Cauvery project. The BWSSB has appealed to the public to use water judiciously and store a sufficient amount beforehand to manage during the disruption. The maintenance work is a routine measure designed to prevent larger, unplanned disruptions in the future and to ensure the city’s water supply remains reliable.
