Saree Lovers, Be Careful: Wearing Sarees Like This Could Increase Your Risk of Skin Cancer!

Cancer

The saree — a timeless symbol of grace and tradition — may carry an unexpected health risk if worn improperly. Medical experts are raising alarms about a rare but serious condition dubbed “saree cancer,” linked to tightly tied petticoats and waist cords that cause chronic skin irritation.

What Is Saree Cancer?

“Saree cancer” refers to a form of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) — a type of skin cancer that can develop due to:

  • Chronic friction from tightly tied saree waist cords or petticoats.
  • Repeated irritation at the same spot on the waistline.
  • Poor ventilation and hygiene in hot, humid climates.

This condition was first documented in 1945 alongside “dhoti cancer,” and has resurfaced in recent medical reports.

Symptoms to Watch For

Women who wear sarees daily — especially in rural areas — should be alert to:

  • Persistent itching or pigmentation changes at the waist.
  • Scaling or thickening of the skin.
  • Non-healing ulcers or wounds.

If untreated, these symptoms can evolve into Marjolin ulcers, a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer.

Why Tight Petticoats Are Risky

Doctors explain that the nada (drawstring) used to secure petticoats can:

  • Cut into the skin over time.
  • Trap sweat and dust, worsening irritation.
  • Cause dermatoses (skin lesions) that may become malignant.

How to Prevent Saree Cancer

Experts recommend simple but effective steps:

  • Avoid overly tight petticoats or waist cords.
  • Rotate the knot position to prevent repeated pressure.
  • Use breathable fabrics and apply moisturizers at night.
  • Seek medical help at the first sign of skin changes.
