Cricket fans are in for a treat as arch-rivals India and Pakistan are reportedly set to be drawn in the same group for the Asia Cup 2025, ensuring at least one high-octane encounter and potentially a second if both teams make it to the final. This highly anticipated development was a key topic of discussion during the recent Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Dhaka.
While India officially holds the hosting rights for the tournament, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has agreed to a neutral venue. This decision comes amidst heightened security concerns, particularly following a recent terror incident in Pahalgam. Dubai and Abu Dhabi have emerged as the frontrunners to host the prestigious event, with reports suggesting that the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) has already given its nod for the use of three venues, though it is anticipated that only two will ultimately be utilized.
The Asia Cup 2025 is tentatively scheduled to take place between September 7 and late September, serving as a crucial preparatory tournament for the T20 World Cup 2026. Key officials, including BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla and ACC President and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, are expected to meet soon to finalize the venues and the complete tournament schedule.
The tournament carries significant financial weight, primarily driven by substantial contributions from Indian broadcasters and sponsors. Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has already secured the media rights for the event. Despite previous diplomatic tensions between the two cricketing nations, the BCCI’s virtual participation in the recent ACC AGM signals positive progress towards ensuring the smooth and successful execution of the Asia Cup 2025.
