Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) woke up to intense rainfall on Tuesday morning, causing widespread waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and flight delays. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued showers across the region until August 17.
City Disrupted by Torrential Rain
Key arterial roads including Minto Bridge, Vijay Chowk, Rafi Marg, Nizamuddin Flyover, and Moti Bagh Flyover were inundated, leading to bumper-to-bumper traffic and commuter chaos. Office-goers and schoolchildren bore the brunt of the early morning downpour, with many areas reporting knee-deep water.
Delhi Traffic Police issued advisories urging residents to avoid flood-prone zones and check real-time updates before heading out. Gurugram and Noida authorities deployed emergency teams to pump out water from underpasses and low-lying colonies.
Flight Operations Affected
At Indira Gandhi International Airport, over 50 flights were delayed and five were cancelled due to persistent showers. Airlines including IndiGo and Air India issued alerts advising passengers to confirm flight status before travel.
IMD Forecast: Rain Till August 17
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR, predicting light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the next five days. Daytime temperatures are expected to hover between 30°C and 35°C, while nighttime lows may drop to 22°C to 26°C.
Wider Impact Across North India
While Delhi grapples with urban flooding, the IMD has issued red alerts for Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and parts of Northeast India, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. Orange alerts are in place for Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha, with disaster management systems activated in vulnerable districts.
