Dharmasthala Case: G. Parameshwara Warns f Strict Action Against False Social Media Posts

Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwar

Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara has issued a stern warning against the spread of false information and hate speech on social media platforms related to the ongoing investigation into the Dharmasthala mass burial case. The government has initiated continuous monitoring of digital platforms and pledged strict legal action against those who attempt to incite public unrest through misinformation.

Background: The Dharmasthala Allegations

The controversy erupted after an anonymous former sanitation worker alleged that he was forced to bury dozens of bodies, including those of women and minors, in Dharmasthala between 1995 and 2014. Some of the bodies reportedly showed signs of sexual assault, according to his statement to a magistrate.

In response, the Karnataka government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by DGP Pronab Mohanty to probe the claims of mass murder, rape, and secret burials.

Government’s Response to Misinformation

Dr. Parameshwara emphasized the need to maintain social harmony and prevent panic:

“We are watching it, and if in any way posts are instigating feelings in society, we will try to stop them. We are taking action against hate speech-related cases,” he told reporters.

He cited previous actions taken against communal posts in Dakshina Kannada district, reinforcing the government’s zero-tolerance stance on digital incitement.

Monitoring and Enforcement Measures

  • A high-level meeting was held at Vidhana Soudha, chaired by Parameshwara, with senior officials including DG-IGP M.A. Saleem, Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, and SIT chief Pronab Mohanty.
  • The government is preparing new regulations to curb fake news and online gambling, with Mohanty briefing the minister on internal security implications.
  • Platforms spreading unverified claims or defamatory content will face legal consequences, including criminal charges under cybercrime and IPC provisions.

SIT Investigation Updates

  • The SIT has begun excavations at 13 identified sites; skeletal remains were found at one location and sent for forensic analysis.
  • The whistleblower has agreed to assist investigators in locating burial sites, provided his family receives protection.
  • Despite speculation, no SIT member has requested exclusion from the probe, according to Parameshwara.

Political and Social Sensitivity

The case has attracted attention from activists, opposition leaders, and progressive thinkers, prompting calls for transparency and accountability. Parameshwara stressed that the investigation must be evidence-based and free from political interference.
