Delhi-NCR On High Alert: Heavy Rain Submerges Gurugram Roads, Yamuna River Nears Danger Mark

Yamuna River

The Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) is experiencing a fresh spell of monsoonal fury, with Gurugram bearing the brunt of incessant heavy rainfall. Overnight downpours have led to widespread waterlogging across the city, severely impacting daily life, disrupting traffic, and even affecting flight operations at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. Authorities have issued a flood warning, urging residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel.

Gurugram Under Water:

Several key areas in Gurugram, including Cyber City, Golf Course Road, Udyog Vihar, and parts of Sohna Road, are submerged under several feet of water. Commuters faced massive jams and arduous delays this morning, with many vehicles breaking down in the inundated streets. Traffic police have been deployed to manage the chaos, but the sheer volume of water has made navigation extremely challenging. “It took me over two hours to cover a distance that usually takes 20 minutes,” lamented a frustrated commuter on NH-48. “Every underpass is like a small lake.”

Flight Operations Affected:

The relentless rain has also had a cascading effect on air travel. While IGI Airport itself has robust drainage systems, the severe waterlogging on approach roads to the airport and reduced visibility have led to flight delays and a few cancellations. Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for updated flight schedules before heading to the airport.

Flood Warning Issued:

With the meteorological department forecasting more rain in the coming 24-48 hours, a flood warning has been issued for low-lying areas in and around Gurugram. District administration officials have urged residents to stay informed through official channels, prepare for potential power outages, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Disaster management teams are on standby to address any emergency situations.

Delhi and Noida Also Witness Rain:

While Gurugram has been hit the hardest, Delhi and Noida have also experienced significant rainfall, leading to cooler temperatures but also contributing to traffic snarls and waterlogged streets in several localities. Civic authorities are working to clear drains and manage the urban flooding.

Monsoon Mayhem Continues:

The current spell of heavy rain is attributed to an active monsoon trough. Meteorologists predict that the intense rainfall activity is likely to continue over the NCR for the next couple of days, gradually subsiding thereafter. Residents are advised to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, and to follow all advisories issued by local authorities.
